Princess Cruises is bringing back original cast members from The Love Boat for a themed voyage aboard the Regal Princess, departing November 16 from Galveston. The seven-day Western Caribbean itinerary includes stops in Roatán and an overnight in Cozumel, but the real draw is the reunion of some of television’s most recognizable cruise staff.

Joining this sailing are Cynthia Lauren Tewes (Julie McCoy) and Charo, who played the beloved April Lopez in multiple episodes. They’ll appear alongside series regulars Fred Grandy, Ted Lange, Bernie Kopell, and Jill Whelan for a full week of themed events, live performances, and meet-and-greets with fans.

A show that helped launch modern cruising

When The Love Boat premiered in 1977, cruising was still seen as an exclusive and somewhat formal vacation option. The show changed that almost overnight. By turning cruise life into weekly primetime entertainment, it gave audiences a glimpse of romance, comedy, and tropical getaways that felt aspirational but attainable.

Princess Cruises was the show's backdrop, and the partnership worked. Public interest in cruising took off during the show’s nine-season run, with Princess becoming one of the most recognized brands in the industry. That cultural legacy still holds power for many travelers today, especially among those who grew up watching the original series.

More than a reunion

While Princess has hosted themed sailings before, this one stands out for two reasons. First, it's the first time Tewes and Charo are joining. Previous cruises featured some of the original cast, but this lineup is closer to a full-circle moment. Second, Charo will perform live onboard, giving guests the rare chance to see her musical talent up close.

Guests can opt into a special “Captain’s Package” that includes exclusive access to cast events, themed dinners, and memorabilia. But even standard cruise guests will have opportunities to attend tribute events, take part in themed activities, and revisit classic episodes during the sailing.

Why Princess is leaning into nostalgia

Cruise lines are increasingly catering to niche audiences and emotional motivators. Themed cruises have exploded in popularity, whether they center around music, television, fitness, or comedy. People want experiences that feel personal, familiar, and story-driven.

For Princess, the Love Boat connection isn’t just a gimmick. It’s part of the brand’s identity. The show helped build its reputation, and in today’s experience-hungry travel market, that legacy has real value. Nostalgia has become a powerful motivator for bookings, especially among older Gen X and Boomer travelers who remember the show’s original run.

And the timing of this cruise is strategic. November is a less competitive season for cruise bookings. Adding a marquee experience helps fill cabins and gives travel media something to talk about as the holiday travel season approaches.

A cast reunion with deeper meaning

Tewes’ return is likely to strike a chord with longtime fans. After stepping away from the spotlight to deal with personal struggles, her participation is both surprising and welcome. Julie McCoy was a fan favorite and a symbol of heart and hospitality. Seeing her back on board is more than nostalgic. It’s affirming.

Charo, best known for her comedic appearances on the show, brings a different kind of authenticity. She is a classically trained musician who brings energy and artistry to her performances. Her presence isn't just sentimental. It's entertaining.

A sign of what’s ahead?

This cruise may reflect a broader shift in how cruise lines create value. Travelers aren’t just looking for destinations. They’re looking for stories. By giving guests a chance to step into a familiar world, even one born on television decades ago, Princess is offering more than a vacation. It’s offering a nostalgic moment in time.
